February 23, 2017

Scandinavian Home Society Restaurant ("The Scan")

Visit: January 2017

Top 3 kid-friendly menu items

1. “Kid Lumberjack”—Finnish pancake, egg, bacon, toast and drink

2. “Small Finn”—Finnish pancake with strawberries, whipped cream and drink

3. Cheeseburger and fries

What’s for the grownups? For the hungry, the “Big Viking” on the breakfast menu: three pancakes, two eggs, ham, bacon or sausage, homefries, toast and fruit. For foodies interested in traditional Finn fare, there’s “mojakka,” a traditional Finnish soup, on the lunch menu

What’s the vibe? Bright, well-kept diner. High ceilings, light wood, Scandi art on the walls and carvings on the booths.

Known for Its history. It was founded in 1923 as part of the “Scandinavian Home Society,” a support group for immigrants that included a library and café for socializing. It’s been in its current location since 1926.

Bonus points for Toy blocks available in bins; a treasure chest at the end of the meal so kids can pick out a little treat.
