January 2020: Fun things to do with kids in Thunder Bay

The year 2020…that seems so futuristic! Here’s how you and your kiddos can bring in the new decade, with our monthly roundup of fun things for families to do in Thunder Bay in January 2020.

 

January 1

 

New Year’s Levee, 317 Park Avenue/Fort William Gardens

Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell hosts these celebrations marking the new year and Thunder Bay’s 50th anniversary. There will be a pancake breakfast and a time capsule from 25 years ago will be opened. Free, starting at 10:30am at the O’Kelly VC Armoury, then free public skating at the Fort William Gardens from 1-3pm.

First Day Hike, Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park

Pour a travel mug and head with the fam to Kakabaka Falls for a “first day” hike at the falls.

January 3

 

Snowman Stories, County Park Library

Come for snowman-themed stories, songs and a special craft. Free, all-ages drop-in, 10:30am.

January 5

 

Winter FunDay: Campfire and Storytelling, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Enjoy stories around the campfire at this event that’s part of the FunDay series. Inside, you can learn the words from the amalgamation song and create stamps based on the city’s flag. Free, 2-4pm.

January 8-11

 

Legally Blonde the Musical, Finlandia Hall

Applauze Theatre presents Legally Blonde the Musical, with Elle Woods getting things done with style and substance. Admission required. January 8-10 at 7:30pm, January 11 at 6pm.

Alice in Wonderland, Urban Abbey

The classic Alice tale comes to life in ACTion Arts’ Alice in Wonderland Jr. and Alice: A New Musical. Admission required, 7pm and 3pm (check their site for specific dates and times).

January 12

 

Winter FunDay: Snowshoeing, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Snowshoeing is a great way for families to play in the snow! Give it a try, with Special Olympians to show you the basics and teach you how to race (meet at Pier 2). Indoors at Mariner’s Hall you can create collage and pastel-based artwork. Free, 2-4pm.

January 16-17

 

The Little Mermaid Jr, Redwood Park Church Auditorium

Thirty young local actors from All the DAZE productions sing, dance and perform in this favourite Disney story. Tickets required, 7:30pm.

January 19

 

Families on Skis, Lappe Nordic Ski Club

Celebrate World Snow Day by giving cross-country skiing a try (or brushing up on your skills) at this family event that includes a trail pass, waxing help, skill stations and more. 10am-2pm, registration suggested.

Winter FunDay: Winter Sports & Snow Fun, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Try out some different winter sports and snow games, or head inside to do some collaborative art in Mariner’s Hall. Free, 2-4pm.

January 26

 

Winter FunDay: Dog-sledding, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Mush! Get a thrilling dog sled ride with Boreal Journeys, available to kids 14 and under. This week’s indoor art projects include creating a collage and hybrid Pokemon characters. Free, 12-4pm for dog-sledding (note extended hours) and 2-4pm for art.

January 31, February 1

 

The Odyssey, Selkirk Auditorium (St. Patrick high school)

Young local actors from Eleanor Drury Children’s Theatre put on a dramatic family-friendly production. Admission required, 7pm/3pm (check their site for details).
