Three diverse exhibits from young local artists open at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery: there’s the Secondary School Art Exhibition that showcases art from eight regional high schools; Our Voice, presented by the Fine Arts Academy at Kingsway Public School featuring natural materials and themes and led by two acclaimed artists-in-residence; and Every Picture Tells a Story, a powerful student photo project by Ecole Gron Morgan.

June 3 George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation Soapbox Races, Waverley Hill and Park
Experience the need for speed at the 14th annual soapbox races, as kid racers compete for prizes and take a thrilling ride down Waverley in their custom creations. Food vendors, artists, crafters, buskers will also be on hand for the fun. Watch a video here.

June 4 Kite Festival, Chippewa Park
Colourful dragons, diamonds and birds swooping soaring against a (hopefully) blue sky: the annual Kite Festival is an awesome way to spend an afternoon. Bring your own kite to fly, watch expert fliers demonstrate their skills with huge specialty kites and take in a variety of kids’ activities like paper airplane workshops, bouncy castles, face painting and build-your-own helicopters, pinwheels and hot air balloons.

Fans of Judy Bloom’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing can see the story brought to life by kid actors in this production by All the Daze, held at Confederation College. Then on June 20-21 it’s time for Groovy, a musical comedy tribute to the 60s, held at Magnus Theatre. Cool!

National Aboriginal Day, Marina Park
National Aboriginal Day’s all-day celebrations begin with a sunrise ceremony, followed by opening ceremonies at 11am and a Pow Wow with a Grand Entry, drumming, craft vendors and feast, a ceremony to honour aboriginal contributions to shaping Canada, and an open-air concert at 8pm.
