January 2019: Fun things to do with kids in Thunder Bay

    Happy 2019 to you! This January in TBay, families can find out what it’s like to be an astronaut, go dogsledding, make snow slime, see an alligator and much more. Check it out!

    First Day Hike, Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park

    Grab your snowshoes and meet a park naturalist for a walk along the Mountain Portage Trail. If you’ve never been to Kakabeka in the winter, the frozen falls are stunning. 1:30 pm, free.

    Snow Slime, Thunder Bay Public Library

    Sparkly snow slime may be the cure for cabin fever. Make your own batch at the County Park branch. 2:30-3:30, free.

    Ski-Snowboarding-Tubing Day, Loch Lomond Ski Area

    It’s definitely time to play in the snow at this pay-by-donation event from 10am to 10pm.

    Little Ray’s Wildlife Festival, Victoriaville Mall

    Meet a sloth, a gator and an armadillo and more at this educational event that features live animal exhibits (including some new ones). 10am-5pm, admission required.

    Winter FunDay, Marina Park

    Parks Canada is the host today, offering a variety of outdoor activities. 2-4pm, free. Indoors at the Baggage Building Arts Centre, you can do a hot air balloon craft. 1-3pm, free.

    Winter FunDay, Marina Park

    Check out some winter outdoor fun, hosted by Parks Canada. 2-4pm, free. Warm up at the Baggage Building Arts Centre and try a craft that also explains the relationship between air and aircraft. 1-3pm, free.

    Astronaut Selection Process, Thunder Bay Public Library

    Any junior astronauts in your house? This is your chance to hear all about the selection process from TBay astronaut candidate Francis Hane, plus try one of the training exercises and ask your Qs at a Q&A session. 6:30-8pm, free.

    Did you know it’s World Snow Day? Celebrate the white stuff with free outdoor activities, 2-4pm. From 1-3pm, there is a free indoor craft activity about air and aircraft at the Baggage Building Arts Centre.

    Snowshoe outing, South Neebing Community Centre

    If you’re looking for some snowshoe buddies, bring your gear and meet at the South Neebing Community Centre to explore the surrounding trails. 2pm, free.

    Bring on the dogsleds! Kids 14 and under get to go for a free short dogsled ride today, between 12-4pm. At the Baggage Building Arts Centre from 1-3pm, you can explore a variety of water-themed crafts.

    Lumberjack Jamboree, Vickers Heights Community Centre

    Try a whole bunch of outdoor activities at the annual family event. The day kicks off with a pancake breakfast from 10am-12:30pm, followed by activities from 12:30-4:30pm.
