The shortest month gets a bonus Leap Day this year! Here’s what’s going on for Thunder Bay families this month, from winter carnivals and science to movies, books and bouncy castles.

February 2

Winter FunDay: Snow Sculpting Fun, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Join Willow Springs to create some cool snow sculptures, or head indoors to the Baggage Building Arts Centre to do some Special Olympic sports icon etching in clay, plus charcoal sketching. 2-4pm, free.

Lumberjack Jamboree, Vickers Heights Community Centre

At this annual event, kick things off with a pancake breakfast ($5, starting at 10am) followed by a variety of fun outdoor activities at 12:30. 10am-3pm, free.

Kingfisher Open House, Kingfisher Lake Outdoor Education Centre

Celebrate 50 years of fun outdoor ed with Kingfisher—try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (equipment provided), explore the facilities and enjoy hot chocolate and hot dogs by the campfire. 10am-4pm, free. On-site parking is very limited and the free shuttle buses are recommended.

Meet & Greet with Kerry James, 144 Strand Avenue

Heartland fan in your house? Actor Kerry James, who plays Caleb Odell on the show, is visiting Greenhawk. Free, various times (check Greenhawk’s Facebook page for the schedule).

Winter FunDay: Thunderwolves Day on the Waterfront, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Bring your skates and skate on the outdoor rink with some Thunderwolves players! Indoors, you can make some Special Olympics sport stamps. 2-4pm, free.

Winter Carnival, North McIntyre Rec Centre

Friday is Family Fun Night, with a movie indoors and skating outdoors (doors open at 5:30pm, movie starts at 6pm, admission $3 including pizza and hot chocolate). Saturday outdoor and indoor events start at 11am and the kitchen will be open for food sales.

February 15-17

Voyageur Winter Carnival, Fort William Historical Park

New events include a Zorb Ball track, human bowling alleys and ice dragon boats, plus popular favourites like tubing hills, skating, wagon rides and live indoor and outdoor entertainment. 11am-5pm, admission required.

Love is in Bloom, Thunder Bay Centennial Botanical Conservatory

It's definitely time for a tropical getaway. Enjoy live music, refreshments and a children's activity at our beautiful warm, green conservatory. 1:30-3:30, free.

Winter FunDay: Pre-Snow Day Fun on the Waterfront, Prince Arthur’s Landing

Try some outdoor winter activities, or make a sport superhero stencil craft indoors. Free, 2-5pm (note extended hours).

SnowDay on the Waterfront, Prince Arthur’s Landing

You won’t believe all the activities going on at this Family Day event: snow painting, snowshoeing, ice fishing, a skating party, bannock over the fire, live music, giant outdoor games, indoor pottery demos, space science activities, community art and much more. 12-5pm, free.

FamJam 2020, CLE Coliseum

Crafts, music, food, face-painting, balloon animals and of course plenty of inflatables are on offer at this family event. 11am-4pm, admission required.

I Read Canadian Drop-In Storytime, TBPL

Canadian authors are in the spotlight at these all-ages storytimes. 1-1:45pm at Brodie on February 19, 10:30-11:30am at Waverley on February 22, free.

74th Annual Winter Carnival, Oliver Road Community Centre

At this long-running event, the indoor Children’s Corner for kids 11 and under opens at 2pm and competitions and games start at 3pm. The canteen is open as well. 12-6pm.

PA Day Story & Craft: Celebrate Black History Month, TBPL

Special guests from the Caribbean African Multicultural Centre of Thunder Bay lead storytime today with Anansi Spider followed by a craft. Free, 10:30-11:15am at Brodie, 2:30-3:30 at County Park.
